August C. “Gus” Engelhardt passed away peacefully at home with his family at his side on June 11, 2012. He was 81. Gus is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Dolly Neelis; his daughter, Beth St. Germain and her husband, Michael; his 3 beautiful granddaughters, Katie, RenTe, and Sally; his sister, Virginia Engelhardt Kelly; as well as many close cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, August and Rosie Engelhardt, his sister, Mamie Engelhardt Geis, and his son, David. Gus was born and raised in uptown New Orleans. He attended Fortier High School and was co-captain of the 1948 State Championship football team. He attended the Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina (“The Fighting Bulldogs”) on a football scholarship and graduated in 1953. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and began a career in insurance shortly thereafter which spanned over a 50 year period. Edna “”Remus”” Penton served as his right hand for over 40 years during his unending insurance years. Gus served as President of the Big I of New Orleans, as well as the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of Louisiana. He was active on agent panels for many different insurance companies. He had been selected as a “Paul Harris Fellow” by the Metairie Rotary Club and “”Boss of the Year”” by the Insurance Women of Greater New Orleans. Gus made lasting impressions on everyone whose lives he touched and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Visitation will be held at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd, New Orleans, LA, on Thursday, June 14, 2012 at 1:00 pm with services at 3:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Citadel Brigadier Foundation, McAlister Field House, 171 Moultrie St. Charleston, SC 29409. Tags: 1953
