Robert Baxter Russell, of Charleston, SC, entered into eternal rest on the afternoon of December 5, 2011.A private graveside service will be held in Magnolia Cemetery. A visitation will be held at 74 Rutledge Avenue, Charleston, SC Thursday between 5:00 and 7:00 pm. Mr. Russell was born September 22, 1919 in Rock Hill, SC, the son of Robert Baxter Russell and Edna Banks Russell. He graduated from Rock Hill High School, The Citadel in 1941, graduate work from Pennsylvania State College, and received an honorary degree in Engineering from The Citadel. He organized Ruscon Construction in 1949 and Ruscon Corporation in 1974. Mr. Russell served as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Ruscon Corporation between 1974 until his retirement in1985. His professional affiliations were past president with Associated General Contractors of America, Carolina Branch, past president with Charleston Trident General Contractors Association and past member of the National Advisory Board with Associated General Contractors of America, The Charleston Chapter of the National Society of Professional Engineers, The Charleston Chapter of Society of American Military Engineers, past president of The Charleston Contractors Association and past Trustee of Clemson Architectural Foundation. His civic involvement included, Past director of the SC Chamber of Commerce, past director of The Charleston Trident Chamber of Commerce, past president/Director of Charleston Council of Navy League and past director of The Charleston Development Board, past member of SC Commission on Higher Education, past member of the SC and United States Chambers of Commerce, past member of The Century Club of the Citadel, past president of The Citadel Development Foundation, where he served for 24 years, past member Advisory Board, Wildlife and Marine Resources Department for the State of SC for two terms, Rotary Club Paul Harris Fellow and Founder of the Strom Thurmond Institute Clemson University of SC. His social activities included his membership in the Charleston Country Club, The Carolina Yacht Club, The Hibernian Society, The Poinsett Club of Greenville, SC, The Palmetto Club of Columbia, SC, Old Baldy Club of Saratoga, WY, Capitol Hill Club of Washington, DC, The Berkeley Country Club, and the Sea Pines Sports Club, Hilton Head Island, SC. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, sailing and golf. He is survived by one son: Robert B. Russell, Jr. (Saida) of Charleston, SC; two daughters: Lynn Russell- Cohen (Stuart) of Stuart, FL; Nancy R. Updegrave (Doug); four grandchildren: Robert B. Russell, III, Christopher James Updegrave, Sarah Teresa Updegrave, and Leah U. Farnham. He is predeceased by his parents and three sisters. Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice .
