Armstrong Jolly Howard, Jr., age 80, of Darlington, died at his residence on Thursday, November 24, 2011. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, November 28, at Darlington Presbyterian Church, with burial following in Grove Hill Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home. Born April 20, 1931 in Darlington County, he was the son of the late Armstrong Jolly Howard and the late Annie Louise Milling Howard. Armstrong graduated from The Citadel in 1953, where he was a member of the elite Summerall Guard. After graduating, he joined the United States Army and served In the Korean War as a second lieutenant. Following his service in the military, he worked with the Federal Land Bank before returning to Darlington to work alongside his father on the family farm. He was a member of Darlington Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife, Meredith Harter Howard, his daughter, Louise H. (Dr. Bradly) Durham of Savannah, GA, three sons: Dr. Armstrong Jolly (Molly) Howard, IV of Savannah, GA, Dr. Robert M. (Cyndie) Howard of Mooresville, NC, Richard (Lindsay) Howard of Darlington; seven grandchildren, Frank Howard, Jessica Durham, Jeff Howard, Blake Durham, Ann Howard, Grace Howard, Richard Huntley Howard, Jr.; and two brothers, Charles G. (Bettis) Howard of Darlington and Whitfield M. (Rebecca) Howard of Murrells Inlet. The family will receive friends from 5-7 Sunday evening at the home of Richard and Lindsay Howard, 1380 Witherspoon Way, Darlington. (1/2 mile off of Pocket Road on S. Charleston Road.)
