Samuel Cantey Gordon, Jr., age 90, of Ellijay, Ga., passed away Friday, July 8, 2011, at his residence. Cantey was born on February 3, 1921, in Pomaria, SC and was raised in Kingstree, SC. He was a 1942 graduate of the Citadel in Charleston, SC with a degree in Business Administration and received a master’s degree in Hospital Administration from the University of Pittsburgh in 1957. He served in the U.S. Army as a 1st Lieutenant from 1942-1946 and was stationed in Germany. He was a hospital administrator for 40 years. He and his wife Helen have lived in Ellijay since 1981. Survivors include: Helen, his wife of 67 years, a son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Pat Gordon, and a daughter and son-in-law, Harriett and Gordon Swennes, all of Atlanta, and three grandsons: Dr. Alton Swennes of Boston, Capt. Will Gordon, stationed at Columbus Air Force Base, Mississippi, and Jim Gordon of Atlanta. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, July 14, 2011 at 5pm at Hope Lutheran Church with Rev. David Smedley officiating, 3295 Old Highway 5 South, Ellijay GA where Cantey and Helen were founders. Visitation will be at 4pm prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Hope Lutheran Church Building Fund or to the Gilmer County Food Pantry. Bernhardt Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
