LTC William (Bud) E. Crosland, Sr., USA (Ret.), of Port Orange, FL and Bel Air, MD, age 80, passed away Saturday, January 22, at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore, MD after a brief illness. Formerly of Aberdeen, MD, he was married to Margaret Loughlin Crosland, of Edgewood, MD, for over 58 years. Born in Bennettsville, SC, Bud was the son of the late William Dana Crosland and Lillian Caroline (White) Crosland. He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Betty); son, William E. Crosland, Jr.; daughters, Elizabeth Ann Crosland, Kathleen L. Crosland, Margaret Carolyn (Crosland) Dietrich, Charlotte Victoria (Crosland) Evering, and Mary Ellen (Crosland) Keithley; grandchildren: David Crosland, Jeffrey Dietrich, Katherine Evering, Casey Evering, Danielle Keithley, and Sarah Keithley; and sister, Margaret Ann Crosland of Leesburg, VA. LTC Crosland earned a Bachelor of Science degree from The Citadel in 1952 and was commissioned in the Army and served for 24 years until retiring in 1975 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During his commissioned career, he served two tours in Viet Nam, three tours in Korea, and tours in France and Germany. He received the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal with First Oak Leaf Cluster, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea), Meritorious Service Medal with 3 Oak Clusters, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Honor Medal (1st Class), and the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm. LTC Crosland participated in the initialization of the 1st Army Honor Guard at Aberdeen Proving Ground which marched in the presidential inauguration of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Following his retirement, he worked for the State of Maryland as a tax auditor and retired in 1988. LTC Crosland was a member of the VFW Post 3282 of Port Orange, FL, the Sojourners, the Military Officers Association of America, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and The Citadel Alumni Association. His passion was his family – his beloved wife, five daughters and his five grand-children. He also enjoyed boating, fishing, swimming, tennis, reading, playing cards, and his hot-tub. A burial service with full military honors will be held in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
