Sylvanus Haile ‘Billy’ Bowen, Jr., 91, of Greenville, SC, died Thursday, October 28, 2010, at St. Francis Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Sybil Reynolds Bowen, of the home; two sons, William Haile Bowen of Greenville and Michael Alexander Bowen and wife Dawn of Atlanta, GA; one daughter, Amy Bowen Masters and her husband, Lieutenant Colonel Arvel Masters of Homestead, FL, and granddaughters Sarah and Aline Masters. Mr. Bowen was born in Greenville, SC March 19, 1919. He was the son of the late Sylvanus Haile Bowen and Elise Carson Bowen. In addition to his parents, Mr. Bowen was predeceased by his sister, Elise Bowen Mullins. He was a 1942 graduate of the Citadel and veteran of the U.S. Army. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. Mr. Bowen was a lifelong resident of Greenville and was associated with Judson Mills for 20 years before becoming owner and operator of Hickory Farms of Ohio franchises in Greenville and Spartanburg. He was a member of the Saint Andrews Society, Cotillion Club, and Greenville Country Club. He was a long time member of Christ Church Episcopal. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 1, 2010 at 2pm at Christ Church Episcopal, 10 North Church St., Greenville, SC, followed by burial in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 4 – 6pm at The Mackey Mortuary, 311 Century Drive, Greenville, SC.
