Rachel Livingston Salter, of The Village at Summerville, died October 14, 2010. Rachel was the wife of Henry Denning Salter, Jr. Born November 15, 1926, to Hugo C. and Eloise Livingston in Orangeburg, SC, Rachel was a 1943 graduate of Orangeburg High School, a 1947 graduate of Winthrop College, and received a Masters degree in Counseling from The Citadel in 1980. She taught home economics in Walterboro, Columbia, Greenville and Charleston, SC, later serving as a guidance counselor at Middleton and St. Andrews High Schools in Charleston. Rachel and Henry were active in Presbyterian Churches throughout their fifty-nine years of marriage. She served as an Elder at First (Scot) Presbyterian Church in Charleston. She was an honorary life member of the Presbyterian Women. She was organizing chairman and first president of Sandhurst Garden Club, a member of the Garden Club of Charleston, Flowertown Garden Club and Riverland Terrace Garden Club. She was also a former member of Delta Kappa Gamma. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are: a daughter, Rebecca Salter Westfall and her husband William R. Westfall of Summerville; two sons, Henry D. Salter, III, and his wife Carol Holt Salter of Clemson, and Thomas Carlisle Salter and his wife Dana Rogers Salter of James Island; a brother Zach E. Livingston of North, SC; and a sister, Emma L. Craig of Niceville, FL. There are nine grandchildren, Sarah Westfall Brown and her husband David of Rock Hill; Bryn Salter and her husband Tripp Mostertz of Chapel Hill, NC; Kelly Salter of Chapel Hill, NC; Wm. Paul Westfall of Summerville; Lane Salter of Chapel Hill, NC; Isaac Salter of Clemson, SC; Chandler, Courtney, and Caroline Salter of James Island; as well as two great-grandsons, Garrett and Keller Brown, and her beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Joel T. Livingston. A memorial service will be held Sunday, October 17, 2010, at 3 pm in the chapel of the Village at Summerville.
