C. Lide Williams, Sr., ’51

Dr. Clifton Lide Williams, Sr. entered into eternal rest on Sunday, October 3, 2010. Dr. Williams was born February 21, 1923 in Georgetown, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Williams, Sr. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Miriam Thames Williams and five children: Deborah Williams Jeter and her husband, Guy of Isle of Palms; Dr. Clifton Lide Williams, Jr. and his wife, Jo Anne of Spartanburg; Cynthia Williams Peper and her husband, Steve of Mt. Pleasant; Jeffrey Michael Williams of Mt. Pleasant; and Dr. Laurie Williams Wallace and her husband, Otway of Mount Pleasant. He leaves ten loving grandchildren who adored their Papa: Cecelia Jeter McPhail, Margaret Williams Humphrey, Guy Wilburn Jeter, Jr., Clifton Lide Williams III, Stephen Brice Peper, Coles Ashton Williams, Blakely Williams Peper, Colin Clarke Wallace, Lucy Byrd Wallace, and Mary Lide Wallace. He was blessed with two great-grandchildren, Deborah Grace McPhail and Miriam Rebecca McPhail. He is survived by his twin brother, Carl Sampey Williams of Dublin, Ga. and his loving sister, Betty Louise Williams of Georgetown. He is predeceased by his sister, Onie Williams Yates and his brother, John Henry Williams, Jr. Dr. Williams was the Salutatorian graduate of Winyah High School in 1940. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942 and served in the South Pacific on the USS Harry Lee and the USS Mission Bay. He subsequently enrolled at The Citadel as a veteran student, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude and Valedictorian of the class of 1951. While attending The Citadel he served as President of the Premedical Society, was a member of the Citadel Round Table, and later became a life member of the Association of Citadel Men. He graduated from Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, N.C. in 1955. From 1955 until 1959 he completed his internship and residency at the Medical College of South Carolina. Following his residency, he was one of the first physicians to complete a newly established fellowship in cardiology at the Medical College of South Carolina. Dr. Williams was the first physician in Georgetown County to practice internal medicine. He was in private practice from 1959 until 1994. Upon retiring from private practice he served as Medical Director at Prince George Convalescence Center and Winyah Nursing Facility until 1999. He served as Medical Director of Palmetto Infusion Services from 1999 until the present. During his career “Dr. Lide” was a most beloved, caring, and compassionate physician. He touched many lives and was adored and respected by his patients and the entire medical community. Early in his medical career Dr. Williams was active in the establishment of Tara Hall Home for Boys by serving on the board and volunteering his professional services. He was also a member of the Widows and Orphans Society of Charleston. He served as President of the Georgetown County Medical Society and was a member of the South Carolina Medical Association. Dr. Williams served as Chief of Staff at Georgetown County Memorial Hospital and as a member of the hospital’s Foundation Board. He was a member of both the South Carolina and American Boards of Medical Directors. Dr. Williams served as a member of the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Heart Association , as well as a member of the South Carolina Internal Medicine Society. Perhaps Dr. Lide’s greatest accomplishment is his legacy of faith and trust in Jesus Christ. He was the longest living active member of the First Baptist Church in Georgetown, where he served as deacon and on numerous committees. In 1960 he established a Sunday School class for young married couples. This class still exists and was later named the Dr. Lide Williams Class in his honor. He loved his Lord with all of his heart, soul, and mind and was an example to others of how to live a Christ-centered life. Funeral services will be at one o’clock on Wednesday afternoon, October 6, 2010, at First Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Ted A. Sherrill. A reception will immediately follow the service at the church Fellowship Hall. Burial will follow the reception in Elmwood Cemetery Annex at three-thirty. Sign a guestbook at: www.mayerfuneralhome.com. The family will receive friends at First Baptist Church on Tuesday evening, October 5, 2010, six until eight o’clock. In lieu of flowers memorials can be sent to First Baptist Church, 219 Cleland St., Georgetown, SC 29440 or the Charleston affiliate of the American Heart Association , 409 King St. Suite 300, Charleston, SC 29403.
