Archie Ray Catoe, 84, of Florence, passed away in McLeod Hospice House June 8, 2010. A graveside service will be Thursday, June 10, 2010, at 3:00 p.m. in Kershaw City Cemetery, Edwards Avenue, Kershaw, SC. The family will receive visitors after the service. Mr. Catoe was born in Kershaw, SC, a son of the late Ed and Molly Parrish Catoe. Archie graduated from Kershaw High School. He received his degree in civil engineering from The Citadel in 1952. He retired from the S.C. Highway Department in 1994 as district engineering administator. Prior to his retirement, he supervised all engineering activities of the State Highway Department in Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Georgetown, Horry, Marion, Marlboro and Williamsburg Counties. Archie was first employed by the Highway Dept. in 1953 as a junior professional engineer assistant and was assigned to the Lancaster area. He transferred to Summerville in 1959 as resident construction engineer. While serving in that capacity, he was assigned as engineer on the construction of I-26 and the terminal interchange at Charleston. In 1969 he was transferred to Orangeburg and to the Florence Office in 1974. Archie served with the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946, a portion of that time was spent in the South Pacific Theater in Operations. He was first married to the late Bonnie Waters Catoe. Surviving are his wife, Annie Gee McKay Catoe, Florence; a son, Art (Jane) Catoe, Columbia, SC; a daughter, Teresa (Alan) Welch, Gaffney, SC; stepsons, Mark (Betsy) McKay, Surfside Beach, SC, Willie (Laura) McKay, Florence; stepdaughter, Karen (Bryan) Calcutt, Florence, SC; a brother, Willis Catoe, Kershaw; grandchildren, Amy (Neal) Mattison, Artie Catoe, Al (Allison) Welch, Courtney Welch; stepgrandchildren, Heather (Ray) Willis, Brooke (Carlos) Benatyky, Katherine Calcutt, Brittany and Ellie McKay; great-grandchildren, Brodie and Molly Mattison, Tripp Welch, Madison and North Willis; and a very good friend, Harry Kennedy. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Hendrix and Sue Faulkenberry; and two brothers, Wade and Beckham Catoe. Memorials may be made to Ebenezer Baptist Church Building Fund, 616 S.
