Thomas G. Lynch, 88, a resident of Southminster, 8919 Park Road, Charlotte, died April 1, 2010. Mr. Lynch was born in Wilmington, NC on May 9, 1921. He was the sixth child of the four sons and three daughters of Herbert A. Lynch and Jane Iredell Green Lynch, both life-long residents of that city. He attended the public schools in Wilmington, was graduated from New Hanover High School in 1937, and enrolled the same year at The Citadel, Charleston, SC. After two years at The Citadel, he transferred to UNC Chapel Hill. During the summer of 1940, while still a student at UNC, he volunteered for the U.S. Navy’s newly created V-7 officers training program. After a month of training at sea and three months of additional training he was commissioned an Ensign USNR. He was then ordered to active duty aboard a Navy destroyer operating in the North Atlantic and later to two other destroyers operating in the Pacific and Aleutian waters. He served in the Navy for more than five years prior to and during World War II, principally at sea on destroyers. Near the end of the war with Japan, he was promoted to Lt. Commander. Mr. Lynch then returned to Chapel Hill to complete his education. He graduated in 1947 with an AB in Journalism and became a staff writer with The Charlotte News. In 1951 he joined the Piedmont & Northern Railway as assistant to the president. He was vice president and a member of the board of directors of that firm in 1969 when it was merged with the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. SCL later became the CSX rail system. Prior to retirement in 1982 he was in charge of CSX’s freight sales and marketing activity in the Carolinas. During his retirement, Mr. Lynch served in a voluntary capacity with Thompson’s Children’s Home, Charlotte, as a member of its Board of Trustees. He was a longtime member of Christ Episcopal Church, a former member of the Piedmont Club of Charlotte and of the Charlotte Country Club. His beloved wife, Emily Sebrell Lynch, died October 10, 2007. He is survived by 6 nieces and 8 nephews. A niece, Jane L. Coghill-Mrs. Cornelius W. III, and a nephew, Herbert L. Harriss, are residents of Charlotte. A memorial service will be held at Southminster at 3:00 PM, Wednesday, April, 14, 2010 with a reception following. The Reverend Verdery Kerr will conduct the service, assisted by The Reverend Lisa Saunders. The family is especially grateful for the loving and exceptional care provided by the entire Southminster healthcare team.
