Dr. Leo Benjamin Simmons, Jr., 65, was born in Wilmington, N.C. lived in Kennett Square, PA and was raised in Williston. Dr. Simmons died Saturday, March 6, 2010. Dr. Simmons was a military officer (CAPT, USN-ret) and general surgeon for more than 35 years. He graduated from The Citadel, received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina and was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He held clinical and teaching posts both stateside and overseas, and served aboard numerous naval vessels. Dr. Simmons earned several military awards during his career including the Meritorious Service Medal and two Navy Commendation Medals. Upon retirement from the Navy, he served as staff surgeon at the VA Medical Center, Wilmington, Delaware. Survivors include his beloved wife, Dr. Susan Johnston Simmons, PhD; children, Leo B., III and Elizabeth; parents, Leo B Simmons, Sr. and Iris Brunjes Simmons; sister, Dr. Rebecca Weatherby, PhD and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Behrens. Funeral Mass will be held 12:00 Noon Wednesday, March 10 at the VA Medical Center Chapel, 1601 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19805, where friends may Call after 10:00 a.m. Graveside services with full military honors accorded will be held Friday 11:00 a.m., March 12 at the Williston Cemetery, Williston, South Carolina.
