Victoria Nan Kitchen Steele January 16, 1928 – March 5, 2010 COLUMBUS, GA – Victoria Nan Kitchen Steele was born January 16, 1928 and died on March 5, 2010. Faithful daughter, loving wife and mother, she lived as peacefully as she died, at the age of 82. Victoria was born in Des Moines, Iowa, the eldest of three children. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Drake University in 1948, she went on to meet Warren and raise seven children. Victoria received her Master’s degree from the Citadel in South Carolina. Her passions were teaching and caring for the mentally handicapped and undeserved individuals. She spent several years in the classroom, while providing a loving home for her family. After moving back to Columbus, GA in 1980 with Warren, to be closer to her aging parents, she worked tirelessly in the Columbus school system, focusing on special education classes at Kendrick High School, implementing and improving programs for mentally handicapped individuals to have the ability to transition to independent living at West Central Georgia Regional Hospital. Victoria was a proud member of Links, Incorporated and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She was a Docent of the Columbus Museum, and active at St. Mary’s Rd. United Methodist Church where she served with the Vacation Bible School, the Altar Guild, served as chair of the Worship Committee, and President of the United Methodist Women. She leaves to mourn, her devoted husband, Warren Steele; one sister, Joy Ward Drew of Illinois; seven children, Holly (Howard) Burns of Maryland, Woody (Trini) Woolery of Michigan, William (Nancy) Steele of Indiana, Audrey Brown of Texas, Theresa Page of Florida, Warren II (Lorie) Steele and Frank (Trina) Steele, both of Columbus, GA; 17 grandchildren; two great grandchildren, and loving caretaker Corissa James. A memorial service will be held at their church, St. Mary’s Road United Methodist Church, 3993 St. Mary’s Rd., Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 1 p.m., with repast immediately following in the fellowship hall of the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Columbus Hospice or the Alzheimer’s Association , in Victoria’s memory. A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.
