Yancey Wilcox Scarborough, Jr., of Charleston, entered into eternal rest on the morning of February 11, 2010, Yancey Wilcox Scarborough, Jr., widower of Helen Cox Scarborough, residence, Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral services Saturday, February 13, 2010 at eleven o’clock in The Cathedral Church of St. Luke and St. Paul. Interment, Magnolia Cemetery. Y.W. was born July 31, 1922 in Charleston, South Carolina, the son of Yancey Wilcox Scarborough and Lillie Thomas Scarborough. He attended the public schools of Charleston, namely James Simmons Elementary and The High School of Charleston, where he served as President of the Student Body. He graduated from The Citadel, Class of 1943 and was commissioned in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. He served 31 months in World War II and was discharged as Captain. He was married for fifty-one years to Helen Cox Scarborough of Myrtle Beach, SC. He was Chairman, President and CEO of Cosmopolitan Life and Atlantic Coast Life, actively working in the insurance business for some forty-five years. He was Secretary-Treasurer of Cosmopolitan Life Insurance Company from 1946 to 1949, a member of the Board of Directors of Atlantic Coast Life Insurance Company and President of Atlantic Coast Life Insurance Company between 1956-1991. Y.W. was a member of The Cathedral Church of St. Luke and St. Paul, where he served as Vestryman, Treasurer, Junior Warden and Senior Warden. In addition, he served as a Trustee of the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina. Mr. Scarborough was very active in civic work. His service, over forty years, was in the following organizations and/or committees: The Charleston Development Board, Governor Holling’s Industry Seeking Committee, Governor Holling’s Committee to establish a Technical Education System (16 Technical Colleges throughout the State), where he was a member for twelve years and chairman for six years, The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education, The South Carolina Research Authority, The Advisory and Finance Committee for South Carolina Governors McNair, West and Riley, President of the Greater Charleston Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the United Way Campaign, Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Medical University of South Carolina Foundation, a member of the Board of the Charleston County Library, the first President of the Charleston Sertoma Club in 1951 and in 1952 The South Carolina State Governor of Sertoma International, a member of the National Board of the YMCA, Boy Scout Master 1949-1950 and member of the first committee to consider and raise funds for The Bishop Gadsden Retirement Home. Charleston High School Awards and Recognitions include: Student Body President, The High School of Charleston’s WP Cart Cup, President of the Forum Club and Lettering in basketball and baseball. The Citadel Awards and Recognitions include: The WC White Medal, Captain of Company “”O””, recipient of The John O. Willson Ring, President of the Economic Honor Society and Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. He lettered in Basketball and Freshman Tennis, and was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree. He received his CLU designation from The American College of Life Underwriters. Y.W. was a member of the St. Andrews Society, the Country Club of Charleston, The Carolina Yacht Club and had served as President of The New England Society. His hobbies included boating, fishing, golf, tennis, baseball and basketball. He is survived by two daughters: Lou Ann S. Pratt-Thomas and her husband Harold of Charleston, SC and Frances S. Gunter and her husband Fred of Wadmalaw Island, SC; three sons: Y.W. “”Bill”” Scarborough, III and his wife Joanna of Charleston, SC, George C. Scarborough and his wife Janet of Charleston, SC and John C. Scarborough and his wife Mary Ann of Mt. Pleasant, SC; ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, Samuel Thomas Scarborough and Robert Bowman Scarborough and his sister, Frances S. Webb. Memorials may be made to The Y.W.
