John Harry Chakides, 85, husband of the late Ruth Weekley Chakides, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Friday, December 18, 2009. The relatives and friends of John Chakides are invited to attend his funeral service at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, 30 Race Street, Charleston, Tuesday, December 22, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. Private burial to be held in Mt. Olive Cemetery in Varvnille, SC. ARRANGEMENTS BY J. HENRY STUHR INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL. Friends may call at the Greek Orthodox of the Holy Trinity, Monday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. The Trisagion Memorial Service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Mr. Chakides was born December 1, 1924 in Savannah, GA, son of the late Harry John Chakides and Katherine Hatzi-Daniel Chakides. He attended the Citadel and was a member of the 1944 boxing team known as the Ghost Team. He was drafted in 1944 and served in Army 17th Airborne Division as a Combat Medic where he was wounded in Vith Belgium at the Battle of the Bulge. Upon returning, he graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in business. He was retired from the SC Naval Station in the Industrial Relations Department. He was an avid fisherman throughout his life and spent many years in the community service coaching football and baseball in Mt. Pleasant. He served on the board of Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, where he had a deep and abiding faith. He will be missed by his devoted family and friends. We give thanks to Spring Arbor and Somerby of Mt. Pleasant for their care and the Hospice of Charleston for the grace and support offered at the end of his life. He is survived by a daughter, Katherine Chakides Gaffos (Dr. Staci Gaffos) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; three sons, John H. Chakides Jr., (Claudia) of McClellanville, SC, Philip G. Chakides of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and Daniel H. Chakides (Sherry) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; two brothers, George Chakides (Jackie) of St. Louis, MO and Harry J. Chakides (Jane) of Beaufort, SC; sister, Electra L. Julias of Virginia Beach, VA; seven grandchildren, Electra (Mills), Ariail, Nicholas Gaffos, Katherine Furman (Jody), John H. Chakides, III (Maria), Chandler Chakides, Pamela Chakides, Christine Chakides and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Koutroulakis.
