Theodore L. Weeks, Jr., of Charleston, 76, passed away on Monday, July 27, 2009, in a local hospital surrounded by his family. He was born on December 28, 1932, in Charleston, SC to Theodore L. “Teddy” Weeks, Sr., and Annie Kulinski Weeks. A funeral service will be Thursday at Ashley River Baptist Church, 1101 Savannah Highway, Charleston, SC, at two o’clock in the afternoon. The committal will follow at Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway, Charleston, Wednesday, from five to seven o’clock in the evening. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to; ALS, SC Chapter, P.O. Box 280, Charleston, SC 29402, or Ashley River Baptist Church, 1101 Savannah Highway, Charleston, SC 29407. In 1952, after graduating from Porter Gaud School, Teddy went to serve his country in the United States Air Force where he served four years. After serving in the Air Force, Teddy returned home to attend the Citadel Military College where he was offered a scholarship to play basketball for the Citadel Bulldogs. Teddy was a standout in basketball and was a key player on the famous “Blitz Kids” team coached under Norm Sloan. Teddy was recognized for his many record breaking accomplishments and for his leadership as the team’s star captain. While attending the Citadel, Teddy met the love of his life, Carolyn on a blind date and married her one year later on August 30, 1958. Teddy graduated from the Citadel in 1959 with a degree in Business. After graduating from the Citadel, Teddy went into the insurance business with Metropolitan Life. In 1970, he went to work as an Agent for State Farm Insurance Companies. Teddy was an outstanding mentor to many of the agents. Teddy’s drive and determination led him to break many sales records, causing him to receive many awards while working for State Farm. Due to Teddy’s success he was always being asked to be a motivational speaker to many of the area businesses. Teddy would eventually retire in 2000, after 30 years as a State Farm Agent, Teddy was a sports enthusiast, avid runner, a goal setter and a high achiever. One of Teddy’s goals was to run 50 miles on his 50th birthday. A goal he set and achieved on December 28, 1982. Teddy loved running so much he never missed a chance to run in the Annual Cooper River Bridge Run. As a devoted marathoner, Teddy was also offered the opportunity to run in the Boston Marathon. Teddy was a lifelong member of Ashley River Baptist Church where he served as deacon for many years. He also taught the youth boys Sunday school class. Teddy also coached the ARBC boys basketball team leading them to bring home many championships for the church. Teddy was known to his church family as “The Commissioner” for his creation and commission of the church marble tournaments. Teddy will always be remembered as a kind, gentle and loving servant of God. Teddy was also affectionately known to many friends and family as “Blue Shoes”, “Teddy Bear” or “Uncle Teddy” because he made everyone he met feel like family. His many selfless acts of love and kindness to family and friends will always be treasured. He was always giving to those in need. Teddy was diagnosed with ALS, (Lou Gehrigs disease) in 2007. However he continued to do the things he loved, like working out daily at the gym and walking as long as he could. Teddy had a deep passion to make everyone laugh. His comical sense of humor led him to dress up and play “Clown” for many local parades. His ability to make you laugh came naturally. Making jokes until the day of his death. Teddy adored his family and devoted most of his time to his family. He was a loving and dedicated husband, a doting father and a proud grandfather. He was a Hero to all who knew him. Teddy is survived by his wife of 51 years, Carolyn Foster Weeks and his three daughters; Gail Smith and her husband Carson of Goose Creek, Denise Gaskins and Jill Duncan King and her husband Jamie of Ladson; a special “Papa” to six grandchildren, Christin Smith, Jason Smith, Timothy Gaskins, Cody Gaskins, JC Gaskins, and Brandon Duncan. Also survived by a brother, John Weeks and his wife Libby, sister Ann Rusboldt and her husband Frank of Charleston; a very special nephew, Clarence W Adams, and his brother Steve; sister-in-law, Shirley Carroll Robles and her husband Frank; brother-in-law Tony Foster and his wife Bettye; family friend, Skip Duncan and numerous nieces and nephews.
