Toni Carson Battey, 53, of Hanahan,entered into eternal rest on May 23, 2009; wife of William C. Battey and a teacher at Hanahan Elementary School. The relatives and friends of Bill and Toni Battey are invited to attend a memorial service for the latter, Wednesday, May 27, at three-thirty in the afternoon at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 1150 E. Montague Ave., N. Charleston. Family will receive visitors immediately following the memorial service at St. Thomas Episcopal Church Good Shepherd Hall, as well as Tuesday, May 26 from six to eight o’clock in the evening at St. Thomas Episcopal Church Good Shepherd Hall. Toni Battey was born July 28, 1955 in Charleston, SC, the daughter of the late Lester Barton Carson and Vera James Carson of North Charleston, SC. Toni graduated from Mars Hill College in North Carolina in 1977 and received her Master’s Degree in counseling from The Citadel. She performed mission work in New Jersey and worked in a missionary house in Maryland. During her career, Toni taught terminally ill children in Asheville, NC and she worked as a teacher in the Department of Defense elementary school program in Germany. She was presently teaching first grade at Hanahan Elementary School where she was selected as Teacher of the Year in 2008. Toni was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Toni was a direct descendant of the French Huguenots who settled and lived in Charleston and Berkeley Counties dating back to 1685 and she was a member of the Huguenot Society of South Carolina. She is survived by her husband of Hanahan, SC; one son, W. Brian Battey of Hanahan, SC; sister Terri Carson Clark of Goose Creek, SC; brother, L. Barton Carson Jr. and his wife Nancy Edwards Carson of Hanahan, SC ; nephews, Robbie, Collin, Tyler, Barton, and Spencer; and niece, Jennifer.
