Memorial service for Lee Fagan Brinkley, Jr, 78, will be held Sunday, March 1, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with burial in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Saturday from 4 – 6 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Mr. Brinkley died Monday, February 23, 2009. Born in Charlotte, N.C., May 17, 1930, he was a son of the late Lee F. and Susie Hill Brinkley. He graduated from Dreher High School, attended The Citadel and graduated from The University of South Carolina and was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He was in the Insurance Industry for 50 years. Mr. Brinkley served as president of the Independent Agents of S.C. and was named state “Independent Agent of the Year.” He also served on the Board of Governors of the SC Patients Compensation Fund. He served in the National Guard for 42 years, retiring as a Lt. Colonel. He served as Commander in the Military Order of the World Wars. He was awarded the Order of the Palmetto by Governor Carroll Campbell in 1990, the highest civilian honor in South Carolina. He was an Eagle Scout and was the first Scout Master at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He was past president of Richland Sertoma Club, served on the S.C. Insurance Commission Advisory Committee, the National Safety Council’s S.C. Chapter, was on the board of Old Charleston Insurance Company and was a charter member of The Summit Club. He served on numerous other boards and committees in his long career. He was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, friend and true gentleman. Mr. Brinkley was married to Gloria Hall Brinkley for 57 years. He is also survived by his son, Dr. John Lee Brinkley and wife, Amy, of Irmo; daughters, Brenda B. Byrd and husband, Al, Betsy B. Lohry and husband, Bill, all of Columbia; grandchildren, Leah, Lindsey and Eric Brinkley, Shannon Carrion, Jenifer Wickliffe, Courtney Byrd, Brodia Lee, Stedman and Sarah Vines; great-grandchildren, Raigne, Jadon and Jarod Carrion, Iliana , Mekada and Bendi Wickcliffe and Isis Duncan; and is survived by his Aunt Lucille Waters of Raleigh, N.C. He was predeceased by a brother, John William (Bill) Brinkley. Memorials may be made to Boy Scouts of America, Indian Waters Council, P.O.
