Joseph Lee Murphy, Sr., 87, formerly of Furman, SC died early Friday morning December 5th, 2008 in Winston-Salem, NC after an extended illness. Born October 7th, 1921 in Lena, SC he was the son of the late Judson Lee Murphy and Bertha Smith Murphy. Mr. Murphy was a 1943 graduate of The Citadel, and received a Purple Heart for his service as a 1st. Lieutenant in the United States Army Infantry during World War II. Mr. Murphy married the late Alice Camille Causey on July 4th, 1943. After serving his country Mr. Murphy worked as a rural mail carrier for 30 years, operated a timber business, farmed, and was property manager of Hampton Gardens apartments. Mr. Murphy was a longtime member of Furman United Methodist Church, where he was a steward and treasurer for many years. Mr. Murphy loved the outdoors, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and bird watching. He moved to Winston-Salem, NC in 2002 to be near his children. Surviving are his children, Joseph L. Murphy, Jr. and wife Sharon of Advance, NC; Malcolm McL. Murphy and wife Anna of Charlotte, NC; Camille M. Jones and husband Kim of Winston-Salem, NC. There are two grandchildren, Caroline and Kacy Murphy of Charlotte, NC Funeral services will be held Monday December 8th, 2008 at 11 A.M. at the Furman United Methodist Church directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home of Hampton, SC, with burial to follow in the Lawtonville Cemetery in Estill, SC. Friends may call at the funeral home, located at 300 Mulberry Street West, Hampton, SC (803-943-3352) Sunday evening from 5 until 7 PM and until 10 AM Monday morning when the casket will be placed in the church prior to services. The family wishes to thank Dad’s special friends at Bermuda Village Healthcare Center for their friendship and loving care for the past six years.
