Dr. Earl Haltiwanger died in Atlanta, Saturday, October 11, 2008, after a brief illness. Dr. Haltiwanger was born and raised in Lake City, Florida. Upon completion of the high school he attended, The Citadel, before enlisting in the Navy during World War II. He served in the Hospital Corps and was stationed at St. Albans Navy Hospital , Long Island, N.Y. Upon discharge from the service, he attended Emory University, receiving his A.B. degree in 1947. He was accepted to the Duke University School of Medicine where he received his MD degree in 1951, and remained there for post graduate training to become a Urologist. While serving his residence training at Duke Hospital, he joined the North Carolina National Guard as a regimental surgeon. In 1957, he returned to Atlanta and was hired at the V.A. Hospital at Emory University School of Medicine. He was Chief of Urology at the V.A. Hospital and an Associate Professor of Surgery with Emory University School of Medicine. Concurrent with his employment at Emory, Dr. Haltiwanger was an active member of the Army Reserve in a medical unit. He retired from the Reserve in 1978 as a Colonel and the Commanding Officer of a 1000 bed field hospital. He remained at Emory until his retirement in 1986 and was named an Emeritus Professor of Surgery. After retiring, he returned to his love of music and led “”The Sounds of Swing””, band ; where he played his saxophone and clarinet for many years. Most recently he and his wife, Anne, played in the New Horizon Band for seniors . He also enjoyed traveling extensively during his retirement. Dr. Haltiwanger was predeceased by his wife Barbara Montgomery Haltiwanger; and his son, William Montgomery Haltiwanger. He is survived by his wife, Anne Montgomery Haltiwanger, stepsons and their wives, Gary and Sharon Pardue, and David and Pam Pardue. He had beloved grandchildren, Shea Buckley, Kelley and Jason Lee, and Will Buckley. Dr. Haltiwanger was an Elder and longtime member of First Presbyterian Church, where he found a great spiritual and personal sustenance. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta. Visitation will be held Monday, October 13, 2008, from 6 – 8 P.M., at H.M. Patterson and Son, Arlington Chapel, Sandy Springs. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, 1328 Peachtree Street NE, Atlanta, Ga. 30309.
