Michael Troy Westmoreland, 71, passed away Tuesday, October 7, after a lengthy illness and declining health. He was the son of the late Sanford Troy Westmoreland and Helen Beaman Westmoreland. Mike graduated from The Citadel, Class of 1959 with a business administration degree. He served as an officer in the United States Air Force and retired in 1967 as a Captain. After retirement, he was employed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation as a Federal Bank Examiner in Columbia, S.C., and as Field Office Supervisor in Montgomery, Ala. He retired in 1996 after 30 years and moved back to Chapin and his beloved Lake Murray. He was a member of the Lake Murray Presbyterian Church where he served on several committees. Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Diane Vining Westmoreland, son, Sanford Carl Westmoreland of Chapin, S.C., son and daughter-in-law, Christopher Troy and April Westmoreland of Dacula, Ga.; granddaughters, Brittany Marie and Abigail Grace Westmoreland of Dacula, Ga.; uncles, aunts, cousins and friends. Services will be held Sunday, October 12, at 3 p.m. at Lake Murray Presbyterian Church, interment will be in the Celebration Garden Columbarium adjoining the church. There will be a reception to greet the family at the church following the interment. In lieu of Flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Lake Murray Presbyterian Church, 2721 Dutch Fork Road, Chapin, SC 29036 or to Citadel Foundation Class of 1959, 50th Reunion Gift, 171 Moultrie Street, Charleston, SC 29409.
