Dr. Frank M. Kitchell, of Toms River, N.J., died July 28, 2008. He entered the U.S. Army as a lieutenant in 1942 and served with an anti-artillery unit during World War II where he earned the rank of captain. Kitchell received nine Battle Stars and the Purple Heart for his participation in the invasion of Tunisia, Sicily and Italy. He received a bachelor’s degree in optometry from Ohio State University in 1948. Kitchell operated his optometry practice in Hempstead, N.J., for 37 years and served as director of the Industrial Home for the Blind. He was a member and president of the Hempstead School Board and Hempstead Rotary Club and was chairman of the Advisory Council of the Salvation Army and was a former president of the Nassau County and New York State Optometric Society. Kitchell is survived by a daughter and a brother, Cmdr. William G. Kitchell, USN, Ret., ’39. Tags: 1941
