Lewis Harwell Fallis of Charlotte, NC, died on Tuesday July 1, 2008 at his home. Mr. Fallis was born on November 5, 1910 in Griffin, GA, one of ten children of the late Joseph Jefferson and Alice Blackstock Fallis. He was raised in LaGrange, GA. He obtained a civil engineering degree in 1931 from The Citadel which gave him a life long love of Charleston, SC. After graduation he worked in LaGrange before moving to Charlotte. Mr. Fallis served in the US Army during WWII in an anti aircraft artillery division in Europe. He remained in the Army Reserves until the 1950’s, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. In the late 1940’s Mr. Fallis started his own business, Material Handlers Inc., of which he served as President until retirement in the 1980’s. After retirement he continued working in the same field for several more years. He was an avid flower gardener, loved reading, working crossword puzzles, and attending and watching sporting events. Mr. Fallis was a member of Christ Episcopal Church for over 50 years. Mr. Fallis was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Sara C. Fallis. He is survived by his daughter, Jenny F. Widmer of Charlotte, and also several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, July 7, 2008 from the graveside at Forest Lawn West Cemetery with the Reverend John A. Chrisman, Jr. and the Reverend Lisa Saunders officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 6000 Fairview Rd., Suite 200 Charlotte, NC 28210 or the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058.
