Jack Irwin Sumerel, 79, of 28 Tilbury Way, husband of Catherine Busbee Sumerel, died Friday, May 23, 2008, at his residence. Born in Ware Shoals, S.C., he was the son of the late Murphy T. and Lucille Irwin Sumerel. A 1950 graduate of The Citadel, Mr. Sumerel was the owner of Plaza Pharmacy and a member of First Baptist Church, Greenville. He was a United States Army veteran. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard H. and Connie Sumerel, and Jeffrey D. Sumerel, all of Greenville; two grandchildren, Clarke I. Sumerel of the Air Force Academy, and W. Hughes Sumerel of Greenville; and two sisters, Mary S. Dickson of Rixeyville, Va., and M. Jean Sumerel of Greenville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to United Ministries, 606 Pendleton Street, Greenville, SC 29601. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will follow Tuesday afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown.
