Vernon K. Yon Vernon K. Yon died peacefully Sunday, May 4, 2008, after a short illness. A worship service celebrating Vern’s life will be held on, Thursday, May 8, at 1 p.m. EDT at Killearn United Methodist Church of Tallahassee. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home, Timberlane Chapel (850-893-4177). In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Florida United Methodist Children’s Home, 51 Main Street, Enterprise, FL 32725. Vern was born on August 14, 1929, in Charleston, S.C. He was a graduate of Charleston High School in 1947, and The Citadel in 1951. Vern was proud to serve his country with distinction for 21 years in the United States Air Force. He served in the Korean and Vietnam wars and retired as a Major 1972. After his retirement he moved to Tallahassee and worked for Florida State University, the State of Florida, Department of Labor and Employment Security and the Leon County Veterans Services Division. After his retirement in 1998, he continued to serve as volunteer, assisting veterans and their families. Vern loved working with young people and was active as an adult volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America. He developed a passion for scouting with both of his sons, and especially enjoyed serving as the area scouting coordinator for the Florida United Methodist Churches and was recognized with the God and Service Award. Vern was a member of the Northside Kiwanis Club for 30 years. He served as President from 1982 to 1983 and received the Kiwanian of the Year Award in 1979. He also served as a District 3 Trustee for the Florida Kiwanis Foundation from 1983 to 1992 and 1995 to 1997. He enjoyed leading the club in songs each week and participating in the annual fundraiser of selling oranges. Both Vern and his wife delivered Meals on Wheels for many years in the community after his retirement. Vern was a lifelong Christian and his life reflected his faith in God. He was a member of Killearn United Methodist Church for 26 years and found great joy and fulfillment through the fellowship of his Sunday School Class. He especially loved singing old traditional church hymns. Vern is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Phyllis Wolkins Yon; son, Stephen Yon (and wife Linda); daughter, Kathy Cauley (and husband Chris); four grandchildren, Michael and Kevin Yon, Angela and Katie Cauley, all of Tallahassee; and one brother, T. Edison Yon of Charleston, S.C. He was preceded in death by son, Scott Andrew Yon;two brothers; and one sister. Published in the Tallahassee Democrat on 5/6/2008. Tags: 1951
