Captain Dennis Veator, 82, of Gloucester, Mass., passed away January 16, 2023, at the Lahey Medical Center in Peabody. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Denny was the son of Ernest and Margaret (Quinn) Veator. He was born and raised in Gloucester and was a 1958 graduate of Gloucester High School and a1962 graduate of The Citadel. After college he joined the air force and attended flight school. Captain Veator spent several years in the service including during the Vietnam war flying C130 airplanes with troops and supplies. After the service Denny returned to Gloucester, served in the national guard, and taught mathematics at Gloucester High until retirement.
In summer you could find him on Good Harbor Beach teaching his son Chris and nephews Tom and David how to body surf and of course, working on his tan. He was proud of the fact that he could get two pounds of meat out of a one-pound lobster; his favorite treat. In winter he took the boys to New Hampshire to learn how to ski. He loved to spend time playing cards with his friends at the Elks Lodge. Reading and enjoying his video games were how he liked to spend many nights. He and Sally Merchant, his belove partner, enjoyed their trips to Las Vegas and the Caribbean and in later years spending winters in Florida.
He was predeceased by his parents, aunts and uncles including Robert and Eleanor Quinn and Nora Veator. He is survived by his son Christian, his ex-wife Gayle Stickney New, his granddaughters Cassidy,Emily, and Kiley and their mother Christine. Sally Merchant and her daughter Debbie and husband Chris Galiano, son Randy Sears and wif ON Sharon, grandchildren Jaret,Jacob and Hannah Sears. His sister Donna and husband Sandy Favazza, nephews Tom Favazza and wife Claudia, David Favazza and wife Grace,and grandnieces Maggie, Nora,and Lia grandnephew Xander. And many Quinn and Veator cousins.
Dennis’s visiting hours will be held on Sunday, January 22, 2023, from 1-3pm in the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or Diabetes Association.
