John J. “Jack” Filak, age 92, of Westlake, Ohio, passed away January 2, 2023. Jack was fortunate to have had two happy, loving marriages, first for 45 years to Eleanor (nee Durica), who died in 2001, and then for 16 years to Carol (nee Farr), who survives him. He is survived also by his son Jack (Christy), stepchildren Richard Webb (Kristen) and Janet Denton, and grandchildren Nicholas and Jennifer Filak. Jack, an avid sailor, raced sailboats at Edgewater Yacht Club and Cleveland Yachting Club for 75 years. He traveled widely and also enjoyed Cleveland Orchestra concerts and attending the theater. He was a 1947 graduate of University School and received his BA in 1951 from the Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the US Army, serving in the Korean War, where he received a Combat Infantryman Badge and Purple Heart. Jack was a graduate of Western Reserve University Law School and served as an attorney for many years, first with the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland and later with Union Commerce Bank and Women’s Federal. Visitation at McGorray-Hanna Funeral Home (Westlake), 25620 Center Ridge Rd. from 9:30—10:30 am Tuesday, January 10; Funeral Mass January 10 at 11:00 am at St. Bernadette Church , 2256 Clague Rd., Westlake. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery to follow. Please no flowers.
