James “Jim” Alonzo Rodgers, 90, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Gloria Amsler Rodgers entered into eternal rest Thursday, December 31, 2020. His funeral service will be held at the graveside Monday, January 4, 2021 in Live Oak Memorial Gardens at 12:00 PM (Noon). Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Jim was born in Port Royal, South Carolina on October 9, 1930, a son of Benjamin Bourne and Ella Cone Morris Rodgers. He graduated from North Charleston High School, Class of 1947, and the Citadel, Class of 1958, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. Jim worked for an Electrical Construction Company out of New York City for eleven years, which required living at different construction sites east of the Mississippi River. He returned to Charleston with his family and went to work for the Charleston Naval Shipyard in the Design Division. He retired in 1993. Jim honorably served our country in the U.S. Navy. He served on the USS Bairoko (CVE-115) during the Korean Conflict. He was a life member of Carolina Lodge #375 A.F.M. Free Masons; belonged to the Lions International and life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, Post 5280, Lonaconing, MD; The Tall Cedars Of Lebanon, Cumberland, MD; Junior Chamber of Commerce, Zachary, LA; President of C.E. Williams Middle School PTA and was a member of the South Carolina State PTA Board as the State Legislation Chairman. He also was a member of the Charleston Baptist Church, The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Number 776, the National Rifle Association, The Sons of Confederate Veterans, Secessions Camp 4 and a life member of the Association of Citadel Men.
He is survived by his spouse of 65 years, Gloria Rodgers of Charleston, SC, daughter, Sharon Rodgers of Aiken, SC, daughter, Brenda Espey (Stewart) of Gastonia, NC, daughter, Suzzanne Rodgers McQueen of Charleston, SC, daughter, Kimberly Smith (Samuel) of Charleston, SC, son, James A. Rodgers, Jr. (Stacy), of Charleston, SC; 7 grandchildren: Eric Espey, Frampton Toole IV, Meredith E. Kaufman (Kyle), Rachael E. Weber (Steven), Madalyn S. Fish (Andrew), Shelby Ann Rodgers, Annaclair Turner Rodgers; and 7 great-grandchildren.
