Gary Lee Daniels (Major Ret.), of Raeford, NC, born in Canton, Ohio to the late Dwight Eugene Daniels and Margaret Daniels passed away on July 31, 2017 in Raeford, N.C. He attended Lincoln High School where his talent for playing basketball became obvious. After graduation, he went to The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. where he nurtured his love for English literature and poetry and became an outstanding basketball player. He ranks as the school’s sixth leading career scorer (1,394 points). At one time, he held or shared 11 individual school records and was selected twice to the All-Southern Conference team and once to all-conference tournament squad. He was co-captain of the 1961-1962 team and a member of the famed “Blitz Kids.” When he graduated, he held the school mark for highest career scoring average (19.7) and twice led the team in scoring and rebounding-both in the same season. In 1983, Gary was enshrined in The Citadel Hall of Fame. After graduation from The Citadel in 1962, he made the Army his career. Upon retiring in 1983, he studied horticulture and eventually took over a garden center which he ran until he retired for good. Now he had the leisure to return full time to his old passion- playing basketball and is well known at the Senior Games.
In addition to his parents, Dwight Eugene Daniels and Margaret Everhart, Gary was preceded in death by his brother, Eugene Daniels. Gary is survived by his wife of 36 years, Barbara Daniels; his sisters, Judy Daniels Snyder and Suzanne Studwell Heichel Bruce, brother, Fred Studwell, his beloved cat, Max, and numerous nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
