The Citadel Alumni Association Contributes to Scholarships

The Citadel Alumni Association capped off a banner year of giving at its annual membership meeting. The Association will contribute $900,000 to support college operations, CAA legacy cadet and need-based scholarships, and enhance The Citadel’s Service to Country Tuition Scholarships and National Service Room and Board Scholarships for ROTC cadets.

  • On March 16, 1973, The Citadel Armory was renamed McAlister Field House in honor of COL David S. McAlister, USA, Ret., The Citadel Class of 1924.

McAlister served The Citadel for 48 years in a variety of capacities. He was an outstanding track and baseball athlete, served as faculty representative to the Southern Conference and was the executive secretary-treasurer of the league.

  • The Olde School Blazer Company will be in the Holliday Alumni Center on March 22 from 10am to 4pm and March 23 from 8am to 2pm for our Gold Corps Reunion, a part of Corps Day Weekend. This year they have added blue linen and tartan caps with the old Spike logo!

Olde School is an officially licensed affinity program, which means a portion of their sales will come back to The Citadel.
  • Class of 2024 Parents, Family and Friends, Today is the deadline to purchase a Life Membership for your cadet at the discounted $400.00 price to allow your cadet to receive their membership items with their classmates and to be announced as a Life Member during Commencement. The membership must be paid in full today.

  • March 14, 1892: "A major fire broke out, possibly from a cinder that had slipped through a crack in a chimney caused by the quake. Whatever the cause, the fire did far more damage to the school. A photograph of the day shows a crowd gathered around Marion Square watching flames lapping out of most every window." The Post and Courier

  • The original ownership group of Charleston’s Francis Marion Hotel formed on March 13, 1920, and the hotel opened on February 7, 1924. Some of its famous guests include Elvis Presley, Babe Ruth, Bob Hope, Doris Day and Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy. In 1965, after his retirement as The Citadel’s president, General Mark Clark and his wife lived in the hotel’s penthouse until 1975. In 1989 after Hurricane Hugo, Mayor Joe Riley, ’64, persuaded local banks to contribute to the hotel’s restoration as a landmark in the City of Charleston’s revitalization.
