CITADEL ACTIVITIES: Cadet Activities: 2nd Class Year, Platoon Sergeant, 1st Class year, Commander, Company R, winners of Commandant’s Trophy; Summerall Guards; President of History Club; Dean’s List; AFROTC Distinguished Graduate. Alumni Involvement: Life Member, The Citadel Alumni Association; Member of the Active Duty Advisory Panel, 1990-92; Member, CAA Board as Air Force Active Duty District Director, 1994-96; Brought the Citadel Muster concept to the Alumni Association Board and developed the plan still being used 18 years later; Monthly contributor to The Citadel Foundation.
OCCUPATION: • Recruited in a national search & hired by Miami-Dade County, Florida, (10th largest county in the U. S.) as its first Chief Information Officer: Implemented the e-Government plan, 311 Call Center and numerous other initiatives (1999-2003); • Founded iFONE, Inc., a telecommunications business. MILITARY SERVICE: Air Force active duty, 1968-1997; Overseas tours: Germany (Twice), Italy, Thailand, Saudi Arabia; Served in Thailand during Vietnam War; served in DESERT STORM in Southwest Asia as Deputy Chief of Staff for Command and Control Communications & Computer Systems, planning and implementing USAF deployments to 25 bases in the region & establishment of tactical communications for the air operations at those bases and headquarters; planned & supervised US communications planning & execution for the Bosnian Conflict; Retired from US European Command as Brigadier General.
MEMBERSHIPS & OFFICES HELD: Boy Scouts of America as a young man; Life Member, Air Force Association; Member, South Florida Area Citadel Club; Audit Committee Chairman, Biscayne Bay Yacht Club; Member, St. John Neumann Church
AWARDS & HONORS: Military Awards include Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster; Bronze Star; Meritorious Service Medal with six Oak Leaf Clusters; Air Force Commendation Medal; Air Force Achievement Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal (2 awards); Southwest Asia Service Medal with 2 Stars; & Kuwait Liberation Medal. Commanded 1916th Communications Squadron, 1980-82, honored as Best Squadron in Air Force Communications Command, 1982. Honored as the Air Force Communications Command Lance P. Sijan Leadership Award nominee to HQ Air Force. Commanded 3rd Combat Communications Group, the largest communications group in the USAF, 1986-89; supported over 300 deployments worldwide; honored as best Communications Group in the Air Force, 1989. MARITAL STATUS: My wife Peggy and I (married in Summerall Chapel in 1969) have lived in Miami since 1999. We have two children, Ann, a teacher in Memphis, and Randy, a Captain in Special Operations Command in Tampa.
CANDIDATE’S STATEMENT: Like many of you, I have an interest in promoting our unique college and want to serve The Alumni Association in order to continue to raise funds, improve scholarship support for cadets, and help the college leadership and the Development Foundation in any way the Alumni Association can. With the Florida District 10 seats opening this year, I would like to take this opportunity to represent you in the CAA. I ask that when you get the ballot you will give me that opportunity. I will attend all board meetings and keep you informed. Please mention me to other alumni.
